I realized that my brain had been in editing mode. It was able to chop scenes, cut words, or reorder sentence structure, but creation of something new, of that new scene that I need to add, was entirely a different muscle. They must be different parts of the brain. Switching gears was something I hadn't counted on needing to do.
I ended up revising everything in that chapter until I got to the part where I needed to add the new scene. Then I tried to switch gears and just focus on writing, not going back to editing for the rest of the day.
I have a feeling I might run into that with a book I need to work on editing soon… There’s a lot of re-writing in addition to editing…. Sigh.

Oh man, I hadn't really thought about this, but I can totally see it happening to me! Agh! It's so hard to switch sometimes, but also necessary once in a while. I will have to prepare for this and I delve into the editing/revision world!
ReplyDeleteI definitely have to "re-focus" when I start writing from editing. I think it helps that I do my editing on paper first, and then when I write I go to the computer. Sometimes starting long hand also helps to get the juices flowing. Good luck with revisions!
